What Happens if I Put Too Much Oil in My Car? Everett Oil Change

As with any machine, the engine of your vehicle must be serviced on a regular basis. Scheduling regular Everett Oil Changes for your vehicle will help keep it in peak operating condition. Keep in mind that more is definitely not better with regard to engine oil. Too  much oil can cause as much damage to your car as too little oil.

What Does Engine Oil Do?

In addition to lubricating the engine, oil also acts as a coolant. Because the oil cleans the internal components of your car’s engine, it will be black if left too long without changing. New oil is typically a golden color, if the oil in your car is black it’s time to call Everett Oil Change.

How Do I Check the Oil in My Car?

Checking the oil level in your car is recommended every time you fill your gas tank. With your car parked on a level surface, and the engine turned off, remove the oil dipstick. Clean the dipstick with a shop rag (or paper towel) and re-insert dipstick, tightening completely. Remove the dipstick again and read the level.

When Should I Add Oil?

Never add oil to your engine until the dipstick indicates that the level is at least one quart low. Trying to estimate a partial quart can cause you to overfill your engine oil. Overfilling your car’s oil can cause a number of problems.

What Can Happen if My Car Has Too Much Oil?

Excess oil can increase the pressure within the engine components, causing the oil to leak around the seals and gaskets. Additionally, the catalytic converter can become clogged from the excess oil, and the oxygen sensor can become fouled.

A crankcase with too much oil will not operate correctly. The oil will become aerated from the action of the crankshaft, causing the oil to froth. Left unresolved, the frothy oil cannot lubricate the engine properly. This situation can cause the same catastrophic engine failure as a too little or no oil situation.

What Should I Do if I Suspect My Engine Has Too Much Oil?

Should you suspect you have put too much oil in your engine, call Everett Oil Change experts immediately! If unable to have your car serviced immediately, you could remove oil from the oil pan (under the car) by removing the plug and draining excess oil. The best course of action, however, is to refrain from driving your vehicle until you have had a full oil change. Both the air and oil filters must be inspected and changed as necessary.

Should your oil level be less than one quart low, monitor the oil level closely until it reaches at least one full quart below full. Refill the oil with exactly one quart of oil (even if the level indicates more than one quart is needed). Proper maintenance and monitoring of your car engine’s oil level is crucial to the efficient operation of your vehicle’s engine.
